Licence

MIT.
Actually MIT.

No open-core asterisk on the core. The framework, every built-in extension and the bindings are MIT. Two packages are commercial and say so clearly.

Last updated 24 August 2026

MIT: core, react, vue

The engine, document model, extension API, starter kit, tables, comments, task lists, table of contents, unique ids, the drag handle and Markdown. Use it commercially, modify it, redistribute it, no attribution UI required, no warranty.

Nothing gets moved out of the core later to be sold back. If that ever changes, it will be a fork with a different name rather than a quiet edit to this page.

Commercial: ai, collab

@matrajs/ai and @matrajs/collab are source-available under the Matra Commercial License. Free for evaluation, development, testing, teaching, personal projects, registered charities, students, and internal tools at organisations with fewer than three developers on the codebase. Paid otherwise.

No licence key and nothing phones home. The licence is an agreement, not a mechanism. You keep running the version you licensed forever, even if the subscription lapses · what lapses is access to new versions and to support.

Versions before 0.6.0

Every package was MIT up to and including 0.5.0, ai and collab included, and that grant cannot be withdrawn. If you are on 0.5.0 you may stay there under MIT indefinitely.

No runtime check, deliberately

Nothing in the paid packages verifies a licence, calls home, or can be switched off from here. That is a design decision rather than an oversight: a check would be patched out within an hour by anyone who wanted to, and in the meantime it would sit in your production waiting to fail at the worst moment.

Nor is access controlled at download. The source is in a public repository and these packages install from public npm like any other. What you buy is the right to run them in production, plus updates and support · the same arrangement as the Business Source Licence. A lock that a git clone opens is not a lock, and pretending otherwise would cost you an account to manage and buy nobody anything.
